Creating Calm: How Decluttering and Organization Can Support Family Life

For most families, home is more than just a place to live, it is the foundation for daily life, connection, and well-being. Yet, clutter and disorganization can contribute to stress, making it harder for families to feel and be successful. Recognizing this common challenge, NIDC’s Family Support Network (FSN) has been hosting "Creating Calm: Organizing & Decluttering Your Home for Family Harmony" a workshop series, designed and facilitated by NIDC social worker Onleilove Alston, to help families take control of their spaces to foster healthier home environments.

Held on February 10, 24, and 26, the first three sessions brought together parents, caregivers, and community members to explore practical strategies for home organization. The sessions provided tips for creating functional systems that not only improve their living spaces but also reduce stress, strengthen family communication, and increase quality time together.

The workshops facilitated discussions with attendees about sharing tips, personal experiences, and challenges related to decluttering. Many parents expressed that the timing of the series was particularly helpful, as NYCHA renovations are requiring some families to relocate temporarily.

Beyond learning decluttering techniques, participants left with personalized action plans to continue organizing their homes in ways that support family harmony, academic success, and mental well-being.

Join Us for the Next Session on March 13

Currently, there’s one more session scheduled on March 13, and it is open to anyone looking to create a calmer, more functional home environment. This workshop will provide actionable steps and continued support for building an organized and stress-free home.
