NIDC is putting STEM in Action

Empowering Young Innovators at PS 483

At PS 483, students gear up their gloves and goggles, diving deep into the world of STEM through engaging, hands-on experiences that spark curiosity and creativity. Thanks to the ExpandEd STEM Educators Academy, our young learners in grades 2-5 participate in weekly afterschool lessons led by trained STEM educators. These sessions reinforce classroom learning while fostering critical thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork.

Through a valuable partnership with the school-day STEM teacher, NIDC is enhancing the curriculum and providing students with additional opportunities to explore science in meaningful ways. Plus, with generous support from ExpandEd, we’re able to secure essential resources to keep our STEM programming strong. Looking ahead to May, we’re excited to host a STEM Share event, where students will showcase their very own designed projects!

Social Impact Through Design

This February, our fourth and fifth graders will take their learning beyond the classroom by collaborating with a heist artist to tackle a real-world social issue. Over the next few weeks, students will research, discuss, and develop creative solutions—culminating in the design of a custom park bench that raises awareness for their chosen issue. Once completed, the bench will be displayed in a local park, with a special ceremony to celebrate their hard work and share their message with the broader school community.

We are thrilled to see our students apply STEM concepts in ways that make a real difference. Stay tuned for more updates on their incredible projects!
